Affiliate Program for Woods Institute for the Environment and Precourt Energy Efficiency Center
OVERVIEW AND MISSION
The Affiliate Program for the Ward W. and Priscilla B. Woods Institute for the Environment (the Woods Institute) and the Precourt Energy Efficiency Center (the Precourt Center) is a partnership between member industrial firms and Stanford University. The program supports advanced research, policy study, outreach, and education across a broad range of issues at the intersection of energy and environmental science, technology, and policy. A major challenge of the 21st century is the well being of people today and in the future, with respect to water, food, energy, shelter and other resources. At the same time, the life support systems of the earth must be sustained. We seek to foster working solutions to the world's major energy and environmental challenges, while educating the next generation of leaders in creative interdisciplinary problem solving.
Organizationally, the Precourt Center and the Woods Institute are part of Stanford's Initiative on the Environment and Sustainability (the Initiative), which reaches into all seven schools. Initiative leadership is provided by the directors of the Woods Institute and the Precourt Center: Professors Jeff Koseff of the School of Engineering and Barton H. "Buzz" Thompson of the Law School (the Woods Institute) and James L. Sweeney and John Weyant of the School of Engineering (the Precourt Center).

AFFILIATE PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
Objectives for the Affiliate Program include:
- • Engage companies and other organizations in the Initiative.
- • Encourage participating organizations to have representatives participate in events, activities, and research projects to ground the research with real-world experience.
- • Team faculty and graduate students with industry representatives on research projects.
- • Provide direct financial resources, which can play a meaningful role in supporting the Initiative's activities and infrastructure.
- • Validate that the challenges the Initiative focuses on are the ones representing the greatest opportunities for timely, appropriate solutions.
- • Create a neutral forum where companies, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and universities can exchange best practices and pursue "out-of-the-box" ideas for tackling environmental and energy challenges.
- • Foster more rapid commercialization of "working solutions" resulting from the Initiative. When working solutions are identified, corporate partners will be ready and well positioned to work with other relevant organizations to commercialize and bring these solutions to market.
